Scripture:
“God said to Moses, ‘Climb higher up the mountain and wait there for me; I’ll give you tablets of stone, the teachings and commandments that I’ve written to instruct them.’ So Moses got up, accompanied by Joshua his aide. And Moses climbed up the mountain of God. He told the elders of Israel, ‘Wait for us here until we return to you. You have Aaron and Hur with you; if there are any problems, go to them.’ Then Moses climbed the mountain. The Cloud covered the mountain. The Glory of God settled over Mount Sinai. The Cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day he called out of the Cloud to Moses. In the view of the Israelites below, the Glory of God looked like a raging fire at the top of the mountain. Moses entered the middle of the Cloud and climbed the mountain. Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.” Exodus 24:12-18 (MSG)
Perspective:
If you have ever driven through a rain storm, you know that it can be difficult to see clearly. Even with the windshield wipers at full speed, the massive downpour is a distraction. Sometimes, you even have to pull over to wait out the storm. But, after it passes, you sigh as you can finally see the road clearly. It took getting rid of the distraction to regain clarity, and, in our lives, sometimes we have to do the same.
The Israelites had left Egypt and were now in the wilderness. Moses knew the overwhelming responsibility it was to lead a great number of people, and so did God. God wanted to bring wisdom, instruction, and clarity to Moses’ leadership. Moses was going to have a meeting with God on top of a mountain. But, as Moses climbed the mountain, God’s presence encompassed the mountain, and he spent 40 days and 40 nights talking with God. In the following chapters in Exodus, there is an outline of instructions that God gave to Moses for the people of Israel to follow. The defining moments of spending time in God’s presence resulted in clarity, vision, and detailed instructions. In our own lives, is it possible that we simply need to be in God’s presence to find the clarity and solutions we need? If you are making a big decision, it is wise to look at the pros and cons and get wise counsel. Usually, when we make big decisions or we need something from God, we pray about it. But, maybe there is also a time to just sit in God’s presence and wait. Moses waited on the mountain for six days before he heard from God. Sometimes we have to pull away from the noise of life and tune in to God. We need to consistently be near God to hear His Voice in the details of our lives. Take time to press into His presence; He is waiting to bring wisdom, instruction, and clarity into your situation.
