Scripture:
“The Lord appeared again to Abraham near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. One day Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day. He looked up and noticed three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran to meet them and welcomed them, bowing low to the ground.
‘My lord,’ he said, ‘if it pleases you, stop here for a while. Rest in the shade of this tree while water is brought to wash your feet. And since you’ve honored your servant with this visit, let me prepare some food to refresh you before you continue on your journey.’
‘All right,’ they said. ‘Do as you have said.’
So Abraham ran back to the tent and said to Sarah, ‘Hurry! Get three large measures of your best flour, knead it into dough, and bake some bread.’ Then Abraham ran out to the herd and chose a tender calf and gave it to his servant, who quickly prepared it. When the food was ready, Abraham took some yogurt and milk and the roasted meat, and he served it to the men. As they ate, Abraham waited on them in the shade of the trees.
‘Where is Sarah, your wife?’ the visitors asked.
‘She’s inside the tent,’ Abraham replied.
Then one of them said, ‘I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!’
Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent.” Genesis 18:1-11 (NLT)
Perspective:
Abraham was resting while waiting until the cool of the day to finish working. It was almost as if he was expectantly surveying his surroundings and when he saw people, he jumped at the opportunity to show them hospitality. He didn’t just wave as they passed by; he invited them in. He gathered Sarah to help with the preparations for these visitors. While Abraham was giving, God was getting ready to give him something as well. The visitors were curious about his wife, and God used this moment to speak a divine promise into their midst. Sarah, who was past child bearing years, would see this promise grow to the point of fruition. Sarah had already experienced the disappointment and frustration of her plan to have her servant bear a child as an heir. But, God still had more for them. Abraham was making way for God’s Word in His life by making room for God. Ironically, Abraham was doing his everyday activities, and God showed up. During the hottest part of the day in a desert climate is not the time people want to be preparing food and cooking over a hot stove. It would have been easier to let the moment pass by. Yet, Abraham invited God’s presence into his life by having time and space to spend time with Him. When Abraham chose to invite God into his everyday life, God invited Abraham to participate in a divine promise. When Abraham made room for God, God made a way for Abraham. Through the words spoken, Abraham would have faith to see tomorrow’s answer long before it came.
Sometimes we are looking for that one moment when God gives us a promise for tomorrow. Yet, when we invite God’s presence into our lives, every moment is an opportunity to have Him speak to our hearts. It doesn’t have to be within the walls of a church or on a retreat. You may have gone on a run this morning to find that God was speaking to you even there. Are you making room for God to speak into your life? God wants to breathe fresh faith into your heart through His Word. His promises of blessing are available to you and me. Are we rolling out the red carpet in serving God and spending time with Him in the everyday activities? The years of hurt that Abraham had experienced through lack of children were going to be overshadowed by the fulfillment of God’s Word. When we look to God, we are given faith to see God’s promises for our tomorrows even before they come. In the same way the visitors told Abraham, God’s promises, no matter how impossible they seem, come with an exclamation mark of celebration as we watch God bring miracles into our lives.
