Scripture:

Meanwhile, Simon Peter was back at the fire, still trying to get warm. The others there said to him, ‘Aren’t you one of his disciples?’

He denied it, ‘Not me.’

One of the Chief Priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, ‘Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?’

Again, Peter denied it. Just then a rooster crowed.” John 18:25-27 (MSG)

Perspective:

Peter let down Jesus. Jesus, one of his dearest friends, was on trial, and Peter couldn’t even stand up for him. Peter had put everything on the line by following Jesus. But this moment changed everything. The other disciples who had followed Peter’s lead couldn’t stand behind someone who changed his opinion based on the situation. In a moment, he allowed his emotions of fear and anxiety to cause him to respond in a way that was inconsistent with what he believed. Once the words were out of his mouth, he couldn’t take them back. He had denied association with Jesus. He couldn’t rewind time and handle the situation differently. All he could do was decide what he would do now.

We also experience situations where we may feel we have let down Jesus and a host of other people. The beautiful part about this story was that Peter’s failure gave room for Jesus’ grace. He didn’t deserve it but Jesus works that way. In John 21, Peter and Jesus were sitting on the beach, and Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him. Three times was the magic number for Peter. Jesus wasn’t willing to walk away from Peter over the situation, and He doesn’t want to walk away from you either. You may be on the second or seventieth time of needing God’s grace. It’s available. Reach out and let it wash over you.
