Scripture:

“There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’

He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too’.” 1 Kings 19:9-10 (NIV)

Perspective:

Elijah was on the run; he spent forty days and forty nights making the trip to Horeb. He wanted to go to the mountain in Horeb where it was known people had met with God. The great men of faith had traveled those same roads Elijah navigated. Elijah had a showdown with the false prophets and came out on top before he made this journey. The king wanted to kill him, and Elijah was so tired. When Elijah encountered God, God had one question for him. What was Elijah doing at this mountain? Elijah was hiding from the outcome he thought was coming. His perspective had become limited by his experience. He did the right thing, and now all the wrong people were after him. Elijah needed the God who sent fire down on Mount Caramel to send peace to his weary soul. Elijah went to the place where he thought he could find God. Elijah didn’t have a request; he simply had the facts of his situation, but God’s presence began to change and redirect Elijah on which way to go.

Today, God is asking you the same thing as He asked Elijah. What are you doing here, _____? It might be your physical place or it might be where you find yourself today in various circumstances. Your list may not be the same as Elijah. You may have tried to honor God, which resulted in you losing you job. You may have tried to give your tithes, but your bank account is running dry. You may feel like you are the only one in your situation. Yet, God is wanting to have a conversation and show up in your situation today. You may be hiding from the outcome you think is coming, but your perspective is limited by your current experience. The same God who sent fire down on a mountain, calmed a raging sea, spoke light into the cosmos is the same God who can direct you in the way you need to go. If you are hiding, God is there with one question for you. What are you doing here? The answer is not in the question but the one who is asking. He can help you find your way forward.
