Scripture:
“He continued this subject with his disciples. ‘Don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or if the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your inner life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the ravens, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, carefree in the care of God. And you count far more’.” Luke 12:22-24 (MSG)
Perspective:
Jesus had the massive crowds hovering around him, but he knew his greatest impact would not be with the crowds. His greatest impact would be with the disciples as they saw him live life everyday. Jesus was telling the disciples a story about a rich man who ended up with nothing at the end of his life. He knew that a focus on material possessions was a sure way to create dissatisfaction in life. Jesus told them to not let worry be the first and last thing on their mind. God was able to take care of them.
Our culture perpetuates the idea that we have to do more, be more, and have more. While the initial premise to be productive and fruitful is good, it can become burdensome to live up to the expectations of those around us. Jesus is inviting you to lighten your load. You don’t have to let worry consume your heart and mind in the morning and overwhelm you when you fall asleep. There is far more to you than the things you are trying to balance and juggle, while hoping you are getting it right. God counts you as important, and you haven’t left His sight. So, lighten your load by letting God do the heavy lifting and rest in His promise that He wants the best for you.
