David sent his men to do what he was supposed to do – fight battles. As king, he should have been leading the charge against the enemies God commanded him to destroy. That year, David decided to do something different. Instead of leading his men, he decided to stay home. That one decision had colossal consequences. He may have been tired or just didn’t want to go. Achish planned on David going into this battle as his personal bodyguard. However, the Philistine officers would not allow it. David tried again, but he wasn’t allowed to go fight on behalf of the Philistines. Interestingly, Saul and his sons were killed in this battle with the Philistines.
