“Just then Jesus looked up and saw the rich people dropping offerings in the collection plate. Then he saw a poor widow put in two pennies. He said, “The plain truth is that this widow has given by far the largest offering today. All these others made offerings that they’ll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford—she gave her all!” Luke 21:1-4
The sparkle from the offering basket was glimmering all over the ceiling. Then, the door swung open, and in walked the rich people. It had become their weekly ritual. They would walk to the center of the meeting place and put all of their money in the offering. Just to make sure that people thought they gave a lot of money, they made sure it was all in small coins. Everyone couldn’t believe they had so much money, and that they were giving so much money away. It didn’t make sense.
Then, a older woman slipped in the back of the church. The bench slightly cracked. No one ever noticed her. The rich people were now done with their parade down the aisle. The people were in awe. Everyone wanted to be holy like the rich people.
At the end of church, people started leaving, but Jesus saw the older woman out of the corner of his eye walk up to the front. He saw her put something in the offering. Jesus smiled to himself. Jesus turned to the people and said that the widow had given the largest offering today. The people couldn’t believe it. How could she have given more money than the rich people?
Jesus said that she had given her all. If the widow gave the largest offering, then maybe it wasn’t about the money after all. The rich people had essentially given loose change. It wasn’t a sacrifice at all, but the sacrifice is what counted with Jesus.
Jesus is more concerned with us giving our all, than tossing our loose change into the offering. So, it is less about the money, and more about you. What are you giving to Jesus today? If you have nothing to give, put your feet in the offering basket and give your whole self. No matter what you give, give your best!
