Scripture:
“Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.” Ecclesiastes 5:1-2 (ESV)
Perspective:
Have you ever tried to surprise someone on their birthday? It is really hard, because they usually find out about it beforehand. But, when you surprise someone, really surprise them, they stand there speechless. Their jaw usually drops a little, and they can’t believe it. I love watching this reaction.
Sometimes, when we encounter God, awe is the only response. There is a time for words and a time to be silent. Take a moment to think about the nature of God. He is powerful. He is faithful, even when we are faithless. It should probably cause our jaw to drop a bit. In the book, Cure for the Common Life, Max Lucado states, “Worship God. Applaud Him loud and often. For your sake, you need it. And for Heaven’s sake, he deserves it.” Let awe and wonder fill your heart for the creator of the universe, who wants relationship with you.
