Scripture:
“Don’t look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention.” Matthew 7:13-14
Perspective:
Do you want to be successful? That seems like a rhetorical question. Everyone wants be successful, make their life count, and have all of their needs and wants met. Most people equate success with a certain level of money or fame. What does success look like to you?
Francis Chan, a recognized author and pastor, wrote in his book, Crazy Love, “Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.” Our definition of success should depend on things in life that matter. We have the choice each day to invest our time and energy into something. God says that there are no shortcuts to Him. When everyone is looking for the easy way out, God is asking for our lives. If you succeed at everything else in the world, but fail at your relationship with God, have you really succeeded? The opposite is also true. If you fail at everything but choose to follow God, you haven’t failed at all. While we must be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us, let us pursue being successful in something that matters, our relationship with God.
