Scripture:

“Sing, O barren one, who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud,  you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of her who is married,” says the Lord“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left, and your offspring will possess the nations and will people the desolate cities.” Isaiah 54:1-3 (ESV)

Perspective:

God spoke a word through the prophet, Isaiah, to the Israelites in midst of bleak circumstances and exile. For a woman to not have children in that day, it would have been very devastating. There were no retirement plans or government to take care of people in their old age. Children were charged with taking care of their elderly parents. So, Isaiah used this analogy to compare what God was going to do for the Israelites. He was going to enlarge their territory, even though the people had been reduced in size by exile and devastation. God was promising the people that there would be more for them and the shame of their former life would no longer define them.

What in your life seems barren? God wants to breathe life into your situation and prepare your heart for expansion even before it arrives. As a woman’s body expands to make room for a new child, God needs to stretch and increase your capacity in order to prepare for the future blessing that is coming. It may require growing pains. This truth may seem so impossible to you because of where you have been. You may be hoping for financial blessings, even while facing debt. You may be hoping for a spouse, even while not seeing how it could come about. You may be hoping for health, even when the diagnosis seems bleak. God’s present work is not dictated by your past performance. If God promises more, then don’t hold on to barrenness even if that is all that you have experienced. God says to sing even in midst of where you have been because a change is coming.
