Scripture:

“The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.’

So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.” Luke 15:16-20 (NLT)

Perspective:

The son who went on a long journey with his inheritance in hand seemed like he had the perfect solution to find the freedom he was seeking. However, he wasn’t expecting that his decisions would take a turn for the worse. He was frivolous in how he managed his resources and eventually ran out of money. He got a job working for a farmer, but still didn’t have enough money to eat. He finally humbled himself and returned home while planning to request to be his father’s servant. This father was watching and waiting for his son to return. When the dust in the distance started to stir, he didn’t waste a minute in reaching out. He could have stayed in his chair and waited, but he loved the person at the end more.

Good parents experience this type of love with their children. They are not sitting around wishing bad things to happen to them. They want to celebrate the good. It can be easy to forget how God sees us when we make mistakes and follow our own way. He is like the loving parent, longing and waiting for us to find our way home. The story of the prodigal son should give us all hope. God wants to meet you today wherever you find yourself. He already went the distance through Jesus to get to you.
