Scripture:

“This is what God says, the God who builds a road right through the ocean, who carves a path through pounding waves, the God who summons horses and chariots and armies—they lie down and then can’t get up; they’re snuffed out like so many candles:

‘Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands’.” Isaiah 43:16-19 (MSG)

Perspective:

The Israelites had been exiled, and Isaiah had given a prophetic message to them about the restoration of the people of Israel. It was a word for them in their current situation, but it was also a word that would later be realized. Isaiah was proclaiming the new work that God would do among the people. The Israelites would have heard the stories of God parting the Red Sea and the people walking through on dry ground. Isaiah referenced that moment to reaffirm that the same God who parted the Red Sea generations ago was still the one who could part the waters. He was pouring hope on the hearts of weary travelers. Even though their circumstances had not changed, God was whispering a promise in midst of their desert.

As you enter a new year, it can be easy to carry the baggage of the previous year with you. As much as we want a new start, the realities of our circumstances don’t change when the clock strikes midnight. However, God is proclaiming to you that He desires to do a new thing in your life. He wants to make a way where there was previously barren land. If this past year felt like a desert, God is going to provide a way through it. He may not transport you from the desert but He is constructing a road that will deliver you where you need to go. You may have to let go of what has or has not happened. If you are in the middle of a desert, you don’t know how far to the other side. It may be closer to keep going than turn back the way you came. Walk on the road He is carving out for you.
