[dropcaps style= ‘square’]A[/dropcaps]s I got in my car, I realized that my car window was completely covered in fingerprints. It might be the fact that it needs to be washed, or I just touch it on accident when I open the door. As my attention was captured by this, I kept seeing fingerprints everywhere – on the mirror, on my phone, on my computer screen, on the glass door going into the store.  The fingerprints indicate that someone has touched it. When we see fingerprints on things, we usually think that it needs cleaned. We want to get rid of them. However, in our lives, we keep looking for God’s fingerprints, and we can have a hard time seeing them. Sometimes we wonder if He is touching anything in our lives.

Seeing His Fingerprints

If you look down at your fingerprints, you can see that they are unique. You can be identified by the specific lines and curves on your finger. In the same way, God’s fingerprints are unique to Him, as well. It takes eyes that can see to find His imprints on our lives. So, I keep looking to see His fingerprints, and sometimes it is easier than others. Yet, when I open my eyes to what He is doing, I see His fingerprints on friends who sold their house in days so they can make a big move. I see His fingerprints on a friend’s unexpected job promotion that was a blessing. I see His fingerprints on someone’s pain when they are finding His strength. I see His fingerprints on a conversation with a stranger. I see Him painting the sky in pink and orange as the sun sets behind the clouds. I see His fingerprints on the message at church on Sunday that correlates with a conversation I had the night before.

Sometimes it can seem like God is anywhere but here. Yet, when we train our heart and mind to see His fingerprints in our lives, we can see glimpses of Him everywhere.

Handwriting On the Wall

When we are facing uncertainty and decisions, we can desire handwriting on the wall.  We want God to show up and give us the exact plan down to the very last detail. Although this might be what we want, it might not be what we need. We want handwriting on the wall, but we actually need the steady reassurance that God is walking with us day in and day out. We need to feel His presence near our hearts when we wake and when we sleep. We need to see His fingerprints on our relationships, our plans, and our destinies. We want the whole picture, but we really need His fingerprints to remind us that He is present in our here and now.

Although a spelled out plan is possible, the small reminders of His working in our lives can give us the hope we need as well. We need the reminder that He is still here. He is still working. His fingerprints are everywhere if we open our hearts to see.

So, if we wonder if God is touching anything in our lives, may our prayer be “Lord, let me see.”

“O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LordYou go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.”

Psalm 139:1-5 (NLT)
